Units of Measure

Units:

• Use metric units for mass, length, area, volume, and capacity.

• Convert between units, including:

• Length: mm, cm, m, km (multiply by 10 as you move to the right)

• Area: mm², cm², m², km² (multiply by 10² as you move to the right)

• Volume: mm³, cm³, m³ (multiply by 10³ as you move to the right)

• Capacity: ml, l

• Mass: g, kg

Convert between area and volume units, e.g. cm² ↔ m², m³ ↔ liters.

Key Concepts

• Break compound shapes into simpler components.

• Use known formulas from 5.2–5.4 for each part.

• Add or subtract areas/volumes as needed.

• Be careful with units and π—answers may be asked for in terms of π or as decimals.
